In 1900, James J. Flynn, Sr. opened his own funeral service firm in a storefront in Perth Amboy. He was joined by his son, James J. Flynn, Jr., (Jay) in 1925, who started as an apprentice, became licensed in 1931, and took over as manager in 1933. The company then became known as Flynn and Son Funeral Home. As case volume rose and with the change from having funerals in residences to using a funeral home, the facilities were expanded.
